Tribute to Buck Northcutt

Guy “Buck” Northcutt passed way this week. He was a lifelong member of Marietta First United Methodist Church and was an important person in the life our church. He was born on July 24, 1928 and lived in Marietta all of his life. He married Marvina Fergus in 1963. Over the years, Buck and Marvina served on many important church committees, and they demonstrated their love for our church in many ways. You can read about Buck in his obituary available at www.mayeswarddobbins.com.

What you might not know about Buck is that he saved the beautiful stained glass windows from our old church on Atlanta Street and brought them to our present location on Whitlock Avenue. Late on the Friday afternoon before the church was to be torn down on Monday, Buck went to the demolition site to ask if they were going to salvage the stained glass windows. The crew leader said that everything was going to be demolished, but that he could have anything he wanted as long as he was off the site by 8:00 AM the following Monday. Buck called his brother-in-law, Dan Worley, and told him to bring his truck and tools and meet him at the site of the old church. They worked all weekend to salvage as many stained glass windows as possible and stored them in Buck’s barn. These windows now adorn the FUMC chapel, the hallways, and other locations around the church. The beautiful rose window located in the Family Life Hall was created from various pieces of stained glass from windows that were unable to be removed as a whole.

He was a great man and our church family would know that it would be his wish that “It is Better to do a Good Deed, Left Untold.”
