History of UMM
The present UMM format originated in England in about 1779 by John Wesley. The concept spread rather rapidly through the British Army and Navy. In the USA, the menís fellowship group started out as independent societies. This was from about 1875 until the turn of the century. The first national conference
was held in 1898. The initial brotherhood organizations underwent several name changes.
In 1907, the brotherhood of St. Paul united with the Wesley Brotherhood and becamethe Methodist Brotherhood. In 1942, it became the Methodist Men. Soon after this, the movement became international. One of the more notable founders of the modern movement was Branch Rickey, an innovative Major League Baseball executive best known for two things: breaking baseballís color barrier by signing the African-American player Jackie Robinson, and later draftingthe first Hispanic superstar, Roberto Clemente.
