The Secret Sauce of Scouting at MFUMC

Scouting in Cobb county can be traced back as early as 1912.  The original Troops 2 and 3 combined in 1947, under Scoutmaster Harry W. Livingston, Jr, and began anew as Troop 277. The troop has been going strong, and chartered every year since then! MFUMC member Dan Worley compiled a history of scouting in Cobb County and his idea about what makes scouting special is offered in this excerpt:

"There is a really big story to be told here, of us boys and men and great fun playing the game of Scouting with all of its outdoor challenges: the bad times and the rewards. The frigid rain, the aches of climbing the trail. The tent leaks or it gets blown away. To wake the next morning on top of the ridge to the unspeakable wonder and beauty of the sun breaking-open a gorgeous day that cancels the bad weather away...except perhaps for the memory of "how bad it was" which we can brag about for years and years. And on the way, just maybe we learned that we really could do that tough thing. Maybe get a little cocky over the fact that we learned to figure things out on our own. The more we did it the better we liked it...

And becoming the older scout trying to learn to be patient and understanding of the "little guys"; and just maybe we did learn that it is in giving some we receive much more. Learning to plan ahead, to be prepared not just in words but in actual fact; and how that saved us from injury or failure or embarrassment. Or made us just a little bit proud. To be lucky enough to admire and respect our leaders and, maybe years later, appreciate what it cost them to do it, hopefully before its too late to tell them, "Thanks!" But it was mostly just having gut-laughing, vigorous fun with the guys and doing things that our mothers would never ever let us do at home. And if we survived that week in camp or earned-really earned-a badge or rank or two we came to realize that others recognized our efforts and pains and wanted even more than we to celebrate...really celebrate...with us.

All this and much more was now ours to claim."
